Travelling during retirement is a dream for many. However, traveling costs a lot of money and you will need to do some advanced planning before you start living the dream. Retirement is the perfect time to explore the world – without job commitments, young children, and a whole heap of responsibilities on your shoulders. Some people go down a different route and choose to spend their retirement starting a new business or renovating their homes.
But here are a few reasons you should travel the world when you retire instead…
#1 Funding
Many of us receive access to a state or private pension when we retire. You can use your pension to live on and fund your retirement travels – depending on the size of the sum you receive. However, if you don’t receive enough money to travel the world and cover your daily living costs, you may have to look at other revenues.
You could start a small business, like ironing services or dog walking, to earn some extra cash. Or you could apply for an equity release from your home to free up some funding for travel and give you access to more usable money.
#2 Time Flexibility
During your retirement years, you are likely to have a lot more time to go and explore destinations. You are no longer restricted by school holidays, bank holidays and as much annual leave as your job allows. Retirement can give you more flexibility and a chance to take a trip just for you.
#3 Discovering New Places
You should make a wander list before you begin planning your trips in retirement. Identify the places you want to see and whether you can group a few of them together on one trip. Long-haul flights can be costly, so if you’re flying to a new part of the world, you may as well see a few places there. For example, if you’re flying to Australia from the UK, you could fly to New Zealand as well on the trip.
#4 Stay in Better Accommodation
If you travelled in your youth, you probably slept on the floor of a few airports and in a few budget hostels. In your retirement, you are better off renting an apartment to spend a week or so in. You can explore the area at a leisurely pace and enjoy relaxing in your own space. Air BnB is a great place to find some local apartments at various price ranges.
#5 Relaxation
Travelling doesn’t need to be an adventure holiday in a remote location. It can be a relaxing break on a beach with your loved one and a few cocktails. Visit the attractions you want to see and indulge in a few luxury restaurants if you have the budget. You don’t need to go backpacking to get the traveller experience – you can travel in style!
